According to new reports from credit referencing agencies, over 48 percent of landlords will only take on credit worthy referenced tenants. Letting agents were found to be the most strict, by regularly checking the bankruptcy register, and using the comprehensive in depth service to verify prospective tenants.

Most tenants believe this is unfair on them however landlords who have found to be very lenient in the past have complained of mounting tenant arrears. Although rental payments history does not form part of the tenant's credit score, there are increasing calls to the industry for this to become a norm.

If tenants rental payment history can be taken into account, this would be positive for potencial tenants with an average or poor credit rating. This in return will provide landlords a better view of the tenants.
